House Speaker proposes firm sanctions on officials responsible
in Ambon incident
JAKARTA (Antara): Firm sanctions should be imposed on officials who failed to
prevent the occurrence of the separatist "RMS" (Republc of South Maluku)-inspired
incident in Ambon on Friday (June 29), House of Representatives Speaker Agung
Laksono said Monday.
But Agung said the punishment was up to the government to decide after making an
evaluation.
"We deeply deplore the incident which has humiliated the president," Agung said,
referring to an unscheduled "cakalele" dance performed by some 30 RMS
sympathizers in front of President Yudhoyono when the head of state was attending a
function in observance of the 14th National Family Day (Harganas) at Ambon's
Merdeka square last Friday.
He said there were two conclusions that could be drawn from the incident. The first
was that the existing system to protect the president was still weak and the second
that a separatist movement still existed in Indonesia.
"Therefore, the government should be more careful," Agung said. (***)
