RI seeks extradition of RMS leader
JAKARTA: The National Police has issued a red notice for the extradition of Alex
Manuputty, a convicted leader of the South Maluku Republic (RMS) separatist
movement granted asylum by the United States.
"We're working on it with Interpol and the FBI. We're sure we can bring him back,"
National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Sisno Adiwinoto was quoted as saying by
the detik.com news portal.
He said Alex, who fled Indonesia in 2004 after being sentenced to four years
imprisonment by the Supreme Court for mutiny, is believed to still be in Washington
DC.
The red notice is linked to the recent illegal waving of a flag by RMS members in
Ambon in front of visiting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. -- JP
