Three more people found dead in sunken ship incident
AMBON, Maluku province (Antara): Rescue workers on Friday evacuated eight more
passengers of sunken KM Wahai Star, three already dead, from Manipa and Buano
waters, Western Seram district in Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku.
"Up to Friday noon, the team has found a total of 45 victims, five of them were dead,"
said Lt. Col. Effendi, the search mission coordinator.
He said that the dead victims were identified as Rosiana, Billy Solissa and Sallu
Teslatu. Rosiana was buried in Manipa island, but the two others were evacuated with
the Cantika Indah ship.
Effendi added that the rescue team had so far mobilized six boats and a Nomad
aircraft belong to the Navy Forces to search for the passengers. The mission however,
was still being hindered by rough seas and bad weather.
Around 60 people were reported on board when the KM Wahai Star sank on
Wednesday midnight due to an engine breakdown. But officials are still trying to verify
the exact number as it is common here that people ride on public transportation
without buying a ticket. (**)
