Death toll in Morowali floods rises to 72

PALU (Antara): The death toll in flash floods and landslides in Morowali district, Central Sulawesi Province, rose from 57 to 72 on Thursday.

Morowali district head Datlin Tamalagi said on Thursday that the death toll rose to 72 after more bodies had been evacuated since Wednesday.

"The additonal fatalities were identified to be from Ueruru and Boba villages in Bungku Utra subdistrict," Tatlin Tamalagi said when contacted by phone on Thursday.

But the number of fatalities mentioned by Tamalagi was different from those cited by the head of Morowali district`s social welfare office, Rosmaniel Songko, who said that the 72 dead victims included those who had been reported missing.

He said 26 bodies discovered in Ueruru had been buried in Baturube village in Bungku Utara sub district while the 46 missing people were made up of 34 in Ueruru and 12 in Boba.

"Therefore, the total number of fatalities is 72," he said.

Flash floods which have been hitting Morowali District since July 17, 2007, have affected 30 villages in North Bungku, Mamosalato, Soyo Jaya and Petasia sub districts. (***)
