Death toll in Morowali floods rises to 72
PALU (Antara): The death toll in flash floods and landslides in Morowali district,
Central Sulawesi Province, rose from 57 to 72 on Thursday.
Morowali district head Datlin Tamalagi said on Thursday that the death toll rose to 72
after more bodies had been evacuated since Wednesday.
"The additonal fatalities were identified to be from Ueruru and Boba villages in Bungku
Utra subdistrict," Tatlin Tamalagi said when contacted by phone on Thursday.
But the number of fatalities mentioned by Tamalagi was different from those cited by
the head of Morowali district`s social welfare office, Rosmaniel Songko, who said that
the 72 dead victims included those who had been reported missing.
He said 26 bodies discovered in Ueruru had been buried in Baturube village in Bungku
Utara sub district while the 46 missing people were made up of 34 in Ueruru and 12 in
Boba.
"Therefore, the total number of fatalities is 72," he said.
Flash floods which have been hitting Morowali District since July 17, 2007, have
affected 30 villages in North Bungku, Mamosalato, Soyo Jaya and Petasia sub
districts. (***)
