Quake sparks tsunami warning
Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning today for the eastern province of
North Maluku after a 6.6-magnitude quake hit the area, a meteorology official said.
The earthquake was centred 57km under the seabed, about 230km northwest of the
town of Ternate, the capital of North Maluku, said the official. "Judging from the
magnitude, there is a potential that a tsunami might develop," he told AFP. The US
Geological Survey put the quake at magnitude 7.4 and said the epicentre was 88km
deep. The earthquake sent panicked residents fleeing from buildings, authorities and
witnesses said. The tsunami warning was broadcast on national television. The US
National Weather Service later said there was no threat of a destructive, widespread
tsunami after the quake.
