The Desert Tournament in April 2000 really started the whole year for the Fianna, despite the fact that it happened at the end of the previous season! The potential in the club was recognised and it was decided to try our best to make and make a concerted effort to train and expand...this eventually becoming the cornerstone of the great season to come.
women's team
It had been a couple of years since Abu Dhabi had been able to field a women's team, so it was with great pleasure that the intrepid bunch of girls, resplendently decked out in their new Ulsterbank sponsored jerseys, stepped out to face the mighty Dubai team...champions of the Gulf

Back Row: Johnny Rea, Marian McElligott, Ann Brady, Caroline McCormack, Bernie Briody, Sandra Morton, Maire Ni Lyne, Pearl Lonergan, Anthony Carey (Coach)

Front Row: Cindy Pittman, Maura Geoghegan, Mairead Rowan, Frankie.

The girls put up a great show in what for most of them was their first (and last!) game of football, eventually losing by two points in a very close fought encounter. Two great goals by Maire Ni Lyne were unfortunately not enough to peg back the scores from Pearl, 'loaned' by Abu Dhabi to Dubai because of injury in their ranks. She never told us that she was good...and henceforth is to be known as 'Dubai Pearl'

The men faired much better, finally getting the better of Dubai...the first victory over the old foe since 1996. A fantastic team performance saw us emerge victorious on a scoreline of

Abu Dhabi 4: 6 Dubai 2 : 5

Adrian Reen emerged, not for the first time, as hero for the day, scoring 2:4 of the Fianna total

Half-time...and it could be any field in Ireland as dusk approached. Tactics for the first great vicory are expounded at length

Back row (l to r): Joe Somers, Des Reilly, Niall Hehir (and Aran), Tom Simpson, Colm McKenna, James Terrett, Denis Crotty

Front row (l to r): Martin Healy, Dixie Collins, Johnny Rea, Anthony Carey, Felim Bolster, Adrian Reen, Des Cogan.

Team Captain, Anthony Carey, receives the first of many trophies to be taken by the Fianna over the next twelve months...but this one was sweet!!
