VALLEY AVALANCHE MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
Weekly Meeting - Thursday, June 3rd, 2004

Present: Dave Duncan, John Currie, Fred Sherman, David Upton, Carrie Hemmings, Mike Graves, Larry Rodriques, Lynn Connors

INTRODUCTIONS AND AGENDA

Lynn Connors was introduced to the group. Agenda items were identified.

BANTOM AAA and MIDGET AAA

Dave Duncan reported that he had positive discussions with David Keith, President of the Mainland Bantam AAA league. He advised that the VAMHA would be offering Bantam AAA this upcoming season. A meeting is scheduled between Mr. Keith, Dave Duncan and Randy Hussy, President of WHMHA, to discuss the upcoming season for Bantom AAA with both associations.

Mike Graves reported on the Midget review meeting and open forum discussion that occurred dealing with the loss of midget players to high school hockey. The plan for the VAMHA for the upcoming season is to run a Midget Minor AAA team. Dave Duncan advised that he had spoken with Ed Curry, the President of the Midget Minor AAA League and advised him of the intent to register a team. Currently, teams from Antigonish, Pictou County, Truro, Western Valley and Brookfield would be in the league. Apparently, there are over 100 potential registrants for Midget hockey with the VAMHA as a result of the date of birth change. Again it was reiterated by various members of the group that West Hants will continue to be advised that their players are welcome to try out for this and any other team.

DISCUSSIONS WITH DARREN BURNS AND JIM MIDGLEY

Dave Upton and John Curry initiated exploratory discussions with Jim Midgley and Darren Burns about facilitating more communication and cooperation between the VAMHA and the Acadia Axemen program on issues such as ice time and player development. A further meeting will be facilitated by Roger Creaser between Darren Burns, Jim Midgley, Dave Upton, John and Ed. The focus of the discussion will be access to ice time to facilitate AAA Bantam and AAA Midget Minor hockey games, access to ice time to facilitate the development of a Novice program, access to Acadia players on a volunteer basis for various teams and access to coaching support. A general discussion of the potential benefits to both the Acadia program and the VAMHA occurred. Concern was expressed about this partnership and will it continue to work to our benefit into the future based on past history. The group was cautiously optimistic and Dave Upton will report back after the conclusion of the Tuesday meeting.

CONTACT WITH GLEN MOSHER

Dave Duncan reported he had a very productive discussion with Glen Mosher in relation to West Hants Bantam players trying out for the VAMHA Bantom AAA program. It was noted that Glen should be called upon in the future, given his years of experience coaching at this level.

COACHING APPLICATIONS AND INTERVIEWS

Ed advised that applications are starting to be filed. Another e-mail will be sent out to all coaches to remind them of the June 11th deadline. Applications have been received primarily from EKMHA and WHMHA coaches. A round table discussion occurred in relation to the process for coach interviews. Mike explained the process used in KAMHA A panel comprised of 4 individuals who were not members of the Executive who have expertise in coaching and 1 referee would be members of the panel plus an Executive member who will act as Chairperson who will have no decision making power. Set questions will be approved and half an hour interview which will probably be scheduled. Criteria for evaluating coaches was also discussed in general terms. No decision has been reached on these issues.

FUND RAISING

Mike discussed the sale of VAMHA cards for which the association would potentially receive the sum of $12.50. Other hockey associations and EMS School has participated in this project as a fund raiser. Mike will advise his contact we will be in a position to make a decision by the end of June. It was agreed by the group that we need to schedule a meeting immediately dealing with fund raising and subsequent to that, deal with the issues surrounding the coaching selection and interview process.

The matter was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
LYNN M. CONNORS
Secretary
