ACADIA MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Meeting
Meeting - Thursday,
June 14th, 2005 7:30 p.m.
Hall of Fame Room, Acadia Arena
Present: Dave Duncan, Paul Murphy, Lynn Connors, Sheila
Bower-Jacquard, Mike Graves, Larry Rodriques, John Curry, Laurie Dauphinee,
Dave Upton
Absent: Cam Pongoski / Guest: Aaron Ward
Motion by Dave Duncan, seconded by Sheila Bower-Jacquard, the
minutes of the meeting of April 24th, 2005 are approved. Motion unanimously
passed.
HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA AGM
Dave Duncan reported on the Best Practices Workshop. He will be
circulating a Hockey Operations manual from Yarmouth Minor Hockey Association.
There was a discussion of the Pictou County Heritage Fund of $120,000.00 which
is being professionally invested. The Halifax Hawks charge $35.00 per year for
development programs. The Sydney Player Evaluation presentation was discussed.
There was a discussion of the Atom Pass Program which will introduce to second
year Atom players the initial concept of checking. Pee Wee checking clinics are
now mandatory. Insurance per player this season will be $5.65. The insurance
cost for coaches and managers is $3.65, $2.00 of which will be paid by Hockey
Canada. The cost of insurance for team staff will therefore be covered by
Hockey Nova Scotia this upcoming season. As well, the fees for officers and
directors insurance will be paid through Hockey Canada. The development weekend
will be November 11th to 13th, 2005. The skills competition will be a permanent
fixture in Provincial Championships. There will be a crack down with
coaches/players for language issues which will result in bench minors. This
upcoming season will be the Year of the Veteran sponsored by Tim Horton's. The
crest will be placed on jerseys for each player.
THE DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
Paul reported on the Development Council weekend. There will be
a form in September for the development coordinators and mentors. The mentoring
program will be targeting coaches for the Pee Wee divisionand below. A Skills
Development CD from Hockey Canada is now available for distribution.
CHANGES TO NOVICE PROGRAM
Dave reported on the changes to the Novice Program. There will
now be three levels of Novice - Level 1 being first year novices with a ratio 2
to 1 for practices to games; Level 2 for intermediate Novices who have basic
skills with a ratio 1 to 1 for practices two games; and Level 3 for advanced
players who have their basic skills which would be equivalent to our Novice
travel team. Teams are to be picked without try outs and as a result of
consultation with coaches. Motion by Laurie Dauphinee, seconded by Dave Upton
that Acadia Minor Hockey Association have one Novice Level 3 team (travel).
Unanimously approved. Dave Duncan will speak with Hockey Nova Scotia and the
Central Minor Hockey League about whether our team can obtain entry for that
league and/or have the restrictions on its travel permit lifted.
ACADIA MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION A.G.M.
It will be held Wednesday, June 29th, 2005, Hall of Fame room at
7:30 p.m. It will be posted on the web site. Mike will arrange for an ad in the
Advertiser and the Chronicle Herald. A list of potential candidates to fill
positions was discussed. Aaron Ward agreed to be the Pee Wee Division Manager.
Potential candidates for the Development Coordinator were identifying as being
Doug and/or Will. Mike Dauphinee was identified as a potential Novice Division
Manger. Dave Upton will chair the Fund Raising Committee. Karen Ward will be
approached to manage the 50/50 draw on behalf of the Association and Catherine
Morine Collins to act as an equipment manager. The Spindler, Dimmick and Dickey
Moore Awards will be presented as will the Hockey Canada Safety Certificate to
Mike Ward.
COACH SELECTION COMMITTEE
Paul Murphy reported that there were four candidates for the
Midget Division but no candidates for the Midget B team. For Bantam, all four
divisions were covered with applicants. For Pee Wee, there were six applicants
and potentially all teams were covered. For the Atom Division, there were two
applicants and two teams not covered. For Novice Rep, there were two applicants
and for the girls teams, there were three applicants and a requirement for two
coaches. In relation to the Midget Division, three out of four applicants were
requesting Midget AAA. Two applicants were requesting Bantam AA. There were
three coaches looking for the Pee Wee AAA team, one from West Hants, and two
applicants for the Novice travel. The applicant for single teams will be dealt
with after the teams who have multiple applicants. Paul advised that the
following individuals would be potentially sitting on the interview panel being
Dan Clarke, who is an advanced 1 coach and coaches West Kings High School; Mike
Chapman who is an advanced 1 coach and coaches Bridgewater High School; and
Adam Legge who is an intermediate level coach and an assistant coach with
Horton High School. None of these individuals have children in the Acadia Minor
Hockey system and are not applying for Head Coaching positions with the AMHA.
The names of John Dewolfe, Kenny Borden, Charlie Alders, Peter Baldwin, Jack
Schofield, Roy Brown, and Greg Allen were also offered potential panel members.
Paul reported that there would be a set list of questions with an assigned
point value. The questions would be technical in nature and will not be
disclosed in advance of the interview. There would be a Coach Board present for
a diagram answer to questions. Two tentative dates for interviews have been
scheduled being Saturday, June 25th and Tuesday, June 28th in the evening.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Sheila Bower-Jacquard, subject to the AGM, will be assuming the
financial responsibilities as Treasurer for the Association. Our deficit was
estimated as being approximately $6,000.00. There are Rep fees outstanding in
relation to the girls' hockey teams. Attached is a Cash Flow Statement as
Schedule "A". Motion by Sheila Bower-Jacquard that we
fund raise to cover the deficit of $6,000.00 for this past season, seconded by
Lynn Connors. Unanimously aopproved.
REP FEE COLLECTION
There has been no progress made in relation to the collection of
outstanding Rep fees for the girls' hockey teams.
UPDATE ON EQUIPMENT/SWEATER RETURN
The demand letter for the jerseys has not been sent out. Six
gear bags are outstanding out of 91 for the Quick Start Program. A follow up
will occur in relation to the outstanding jerseys.
PRELIMINARY FORECAST REGISTRATION NUMBERS
It appears, based on suggested numbers, we will have four Rep
teams in each of the male divisions, and three Rep teams in the girls'
division. There is also the potential for a Midget C non checking team. We will
potentially need two new sets of sweaters as a result.
REPORT ON PLAYER EVALUATION COMMITTEE
Ice - Dave reported that ice is not available through Acadia and
will have to be booked through the Kentville arena. Ice will be available
September 5th, 2005.
