Subject/Course: Mathematics
Name: Amanda Den Bleker
Grade Level: 8
Date: Wednesday November 12
Topic: Measurement
Time: 8:30-9:20
2. PREASSESSMENT
a) Learners
There are 30 learners, and 2 will be leaving for special education.
I have not done a rotating activity with the grade 8’s yet.
Students have done group work in small groups before.
AB has difficulty sustaining attention, this activity will keep him involved.
KP and JK should be in separate groups across the room from each other or they
will just distract each other.
KP and JW should be in separate groups, they don’t work well together.
b) Environment
We will be in the classroom at 7 different stations (there will be 8 set up.
28/4 = 4 members per group.
There are 8 stations but there is two of each so that a rotation can go quicker
with smaller groups.
c) Resources
Students will need to bring their rulers.
2 instruction sheets for
each station
2 decks of cards
12 metre sticks
paper clips
new pencils
sticks of chalk
math text books
post-it notes
two one dollar coins
two running shoes?
Introduction:
Discuss with your partner, in what ways do we measure things? linear, volume,
mass, monetary value, time
Introduction to the conversion chart - show students the chart and how it works. (ie. When you move up, the decimal place moves to the right, and when you move down the chart, the decimal place moves to the left.)

5. Assessment |
ACTIVITY #1 - solve mathematical conversion problems with linear units or (metric) measure |
Measure prefix value
|
- 4 students per
group maximum |
- provide students with
probes if they are having difficulties - observe students taking part in group work |
Students will hand in their completed solutions. |
ACTIVITY #2 - apply their knowledge of linear measurement to estimate how many various non-standard units will create one meter |
Becoming familiar with one meter and how different objects use different amounts to create one meter. | See above (SA) | SA | SA |
ACTIVITY #3 - apply their knowledge of linear measurement to estimate and compare two measures/distances |
Be able to develop measuring skills through estimation and accurate measuring by application. | SA | SA | SA |
ACTIVITY #4 - brainstorm and list (minimum 20) uses of measurement in the home, workplace and in the community where precise measurement is required |
Daily uses of measurement,
for example: - when we create budgets - when builders build houses - architects - engineers - pharmacists |
