Not Pretty Enough to be Beauty Queen

Skin pale as the snow
That covers the grass
Lips of bright red
Eyes of green glass

She stands before a mirror
Tears staining her cheeks
With black mascara
Some kind of comfort is all that she seeks

She told him he was pretty, that night
And he whispered back, "You are too"
Kissing him softly, her inner voice raged
"But not pretty enough for you"

He was gone in the morning
As she knew he would be
She may have a heart of gold
But the shell is all anyone can see
