Recommendations to Public Schools for Eliminating Homophobia in the Educational Workplace.
1. Create a specific policy that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in hiring and promotions. Have educational leaders fully endorse this policy.
2. Identify an advocate within the administration to address gay, lesbian and bisexual issues in educational institutuions.
3. Provide training to all administrators, educators and support staff, and students on the issues of sexual orientation and homophobia.
4. Offer workshops to parents and community to confront bias including sexual orientation and see connection to violence.
5. Define harassment over sexual orientation and clearly define channels for reporting this behavior. Define potential consequences.
6. Identify guidelines for appropriate and inappropriate use of language to avoid sexism, racism and homophobia in communication.
7. Provide domestic partner benefits to gay, lesbian and bisexual employees.
8. Create formal and informal policies that allow gay, lesbian and bisexual employees to fully participate in the professional and social events in their workplace. This includes being able to bring a same-sex partner to a social event.
