Lesson #1
Objective: To have students play “Mary had a Little Lamb” in unison, then break into two groups making the song into a round.
Materials: - Soprano Recorder
Ed Sueta Recorder Method Book
Prior Knowledge and
Experiences:
Students have had basic training on the recorder, and retained knowledge very well to be able to have a group lesson inside of class.
Other students inside of class have worked with class on recorder skills
Procedure:
1. First I had the students stand up and began to sway back and fourth to represent the quarter note beat.
2. Then have them clap the 8th note division of the quarter notes, and slow change that into saying 'Ta”, so they could get use to the idea of tonguing.
3. After having them sway and clap, I want to do a quick review of notes on the recorder that pertain to the notes in the song
4. Have the group play together as a whole
5. Break class room into two groups, and then have them create a round.
- One group begins, 2nd group begin two measures later
6. Have each group begin first and begin second.
Indicators of success: -Students grasp idea of 8th notes
-They understand the division of quarter notes into 8th notes.
-Learn and understand new term “round”
Follow-Up: -Have students perform the round in smaller groups.
-Try to incorporate a 3rd part to the round
