Objective:  To have students play through “Joe’s Thing” & “Now Rock, Ye Rested Gentlemen” with note accuracy and correct stylistic articulations.

Materials:  “Joe’s Thing”, Jim Sindero Book, w/ CD

                “Now Rock, Ye Rested Gentlemen”

                Cd player w/ speakers

Prior Knowledge & Experience:                Students have read piece before and have a basic sense of rhythm and articulation for “Now Rock…”. On Joe’s thing students have been playing as a group or section w/Cd.

Procedure: 9:30- Warm-up/Tune

                9:40- “Now Rock, Ye Rested Gentlemen”

                                -Bari/Piano (Ltf Hand)/Trombone/Drums/Bass m. 1-10

                                -Other instruments 1-10, focusing on articulation, Daht, doo & dah

                                -m.10 -26, Legato using Dah articulation: Trumpet and & Alto Sax Duet

                                - M.17 half notes in brass line, connected smoothly

                                -Introduce to drummer way’s to connect phrases and to “kick in” new sections

                                -4 before M 47, transition to new key

                                -M. 47 Bari/ Piano & Bass; play together

                                -Run through Song

                10 am- Run through: Joe’s thing w/cd as group.

                                -Break into sections and work on separately

                10:25- Bring back whole ensemble

-Have students play alone, in pairs, and as a section front of entire ensemble with cd accompaniment as well as the in band rhythm section.

                10:45- General meeting to discuss procedures at District Jazz

Indicators of Success:  Students perform /rehearse sections well.  Show improvement when we return to a group setting and show confidence while playing in front of peers.
