Elementary Methods
Lesson # 5
Objective: Teach and have students begin singing “Think of Me.” To have general idea of how song goes, understanding rhythms, and gain a basic idea of what areas will need more work.
Materials: “Think of Me” Arranged for SSA. Music and words by Andrew Lloyd Weber
Prior Knowledge and Experience: -Most students have heard this song from the movie “Phantom of the Opera”
- Have a general idea of how the melody is sang
- Students understand simple rhythms and other musical notation such as natural, sharp, and flat symbols.
Procedure: -Begin with just the Soprano part in unison.
- Have them sing up till where the pare splits into Sop1 and 2 (w/piano)
- Have alto’s sing their part (w/piano)
- Add both parts together. Fixing any melodic or harmonic problems
- When at the section where voices split into separate parts, teach one part at a time, fixing any issue dealing with pronunciation of words.
-Teach sop 1, then sop 2, then alto. Then add sop 1 with sop 2. Slow down and fix interval problems if needed. Add alto part to complete the three voices.
- Start at the beginning of song, and direct the group, giving specific pitches if needed.
-Run students through the beginning section at least twice with you directing it, then move on to the next section and repeat at least 3 times with you directing.
-Run both sections, fixing any errors that may have occurred after going through both sections.
-Reduce remainder of song into sections, and piece together.
Indicators of Success: -Students remember their pitches as we sing through parts over and over.
-Will be able to remove piano completely from sections, having group sing acapella
-Students retain the knowledge of the previous sections when working on other sections.
Follow-Up: - Begin learning different parts of the piece. Beginning in the middle where the song might be more difficult, working to the end then piecing in the beginning portion of song.
-More focus on how students were pronouncing their words is needed.
