Introduction

You and your friends created a sneaker company and as of now all your business is done on the Internet.  The sneakers have created a lot of buzz and they are selling at a good rate.  You now want to open a flagship store in Gainesville, Florida because that is where the sneaker was created and you have the most customers there.  You have not really looked into a physical retail center because you have done so well online.  But now you want to give your fans a treat, a location where they can actually talk to you about current and new products in person.  They are also able to try the product on for better a fit.  Because this is the first storefront it has to stand out.  The build out will be important because when people see this online you want them feel a need to come to Gainesville to see this in person.  How much does it really cost to run a sneaker business or any business?

The Task

In order to get a full understanding of opening a retail space, you will need to complete the following task.  All the information will not be at your finger tips, you will have to call around and search the web for answers.

Your first task is to find 3 suitable locations to house your store.  Note the rent associated with each location.  Assume you will sign a 3 year lease.  You may need to expand if your company gets larger, so you don't want to get tied down too long.

The second task will be to compile all the necessary cost associated with occupying those 3 spaces ex. rent, tax, build out, electricity, security, phone, etc.

The third task is to make a slide show presentation and write-up to present your findings to potential investors which will include the following; cost to operate and rank in order of your preference location.

*Note that the cost to make the sneakers is also included in the budget.  Sneakers are sold at $80 and cost $15 to make domestically.  Everything is made in the USA.  You will need to know how many sneakers you will have to sell to break-even.

The Process

Step 1:  Items needed

You will need to look for retail locations.  Feel free to contact Realtors.  Listings can also be found in the newspaper and online.  Make sure you ask whats included in the rent.  I have included a few links to help you.

http://www.loopnet.com/Florida/Gainesville

You will need to use a spreadsheet program, with calculations showing monthly cost and whether or not they are variable or fixed.  Fixed would include rent.  Variable could include electricity, phone service, things that change based on usage.  You will also need a word processing program to complete your write-up.

Step 2:  Write-up

The write up will include information about the proposed locations and which you consider is the best choice based on price, square footage, parking, hours you can operate, ease of access and any other factors.

Step 3:  Oral Presentation

You will need to present the costs and information about your ideal location in a presentation to potential investors.

Presentation should last at least 10 minutes but not more than 15 minutes.

Conclusion

After a group completes this project they will have learned how to gather and organize information collected from many different sources.  They have compiled and used data to further their skills through word processing and spreadsheet software.  Students should now have a sense of what it is like opening a retail location and they can apply this to any business.

Hopefully students will take this project into consideration if they are planning on opening a retail shop.  Even if they have a wonderful product it cost too much to keep your store running then it could eventually go under and close down.
