Photo Effects

Once in a while, a photographer will take a photograph and alter it in order to bring a new perspective to it. Other times, he'll take a photo using a technique to make it appear out of the ordinary. This gallery showcases some of both kinds of photos I've altered, effected, and/or monkeyed with for whatever reason. Hope you like 'em.

sunriseThis is a photo I originally took in the summer of 2000 at Myrtle Beach SC. The woman in question is Andrea Ottinger. We had traveled there during the night, and I brought my camera along to take some pics of the sunrise.

When the sun came up, I took some photos, and then asked Andrea to stand between me and the sun. SHe did and I got a pretty good photo of her.

About a month later, I was fiddling around with my copy of Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and pulled this photo out in order to see if I could make the halo around her stand out more.

The more I worked, the more I thought about a conversation Andrea and I had with some other friends of ours a few years earlier. The subject of auras came up, and we tried to determine what color auras we all had. Andrea's was orange.

I think this photo captures that aura pretty well, don't you think?

This photo (lower right) was one I did a few years ago with Crystal ciggyDeVore. I had taken this photo in Black and white, and it turned out really well. Still, when I was working with PhotoDeluxe, I saw what I could do with this photo. I tried different effect filters, but when I solarized it it gained such personality, I had to save it.

The photo above left is another one of Crystal I took in Black and White. This time I used Micrografx Picture Publisher 8 to alter this one. First I converted it to a piece of line art, and then I colored spaces in the photo. I went a bit more natural with Crystal's colors, and went a bit wilder on her background.

This photo is a bit different in that the effect was done "in camera". I took this one at a rest stop in April 2000. My car had broken down and I was waiting for someone to pick me up.

In the meantime, I broke out my camera and tripod, and took a time lapse photo of me standing in front of the Jeep. I set the shutter and dashed out in front of the car for a couple of minutes. Thenk I dashed back and kept the shutter open for a few more minutes.

I especially like the ghostly image I made in the shot. Pretty proud of this shot, if I do say so myself. :)

This is a photo I took of Diona getting a tattoo (right). It was the first color print I made at home, and it turned out well. This manipulation of it was done in much the same way as the one of Crystal above. The only difference is that I let the program color it in. Above is another shot of Diona. This one was done on PhotoDeluxe, and uses a Difference Cluds filter to add a striking look to the photo.

The photo above isn't really a photo; it's a scan I made of my face with my computer's scanner. A friend had sent me a link to a site where people had made scans of their pet cats. Inspired by this, I used my scanner, put my face in the bed and hit the "scan: button. I did a few of these, but I like this one the best.. It's kinda sweet, and yet a little grotesque.

The final photo in our gallery is a straight-out photomanipulation of a photo I made of Crystal DeVore in October 2000. She had posed in one photo in a style very reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe from "The Seven Year Itch". I figured "Heck, why not put the two togfether, for comparison's sake?" I found a photo of Marilyn in "the pose" and composited the two together into one photo.

To make it more authentic, I converted it to Black and white, and added some sepia toning.
