Richard Pearse
Centenary of Flight

A front on view of the MOTAT reconstruction, taken through a gap in the wire fence. One additional change I had noted, was that the air scoops, used for lateral control, on the side of the wings were in fact disabled and were retained in place with leather straps. The plane, as operated, had only rudder and elevator control. By this stage of the proceedings, the material used to cover the wings was thoroughly soaked and it was billowing in the wind.

After this, Darren and I returned to the safety of our SUV, departed Waitohi, and we met up with some friends, Daphne and Gavin, who'd also come down to see the take-off attempt, at a local cafe where we warmed ourselves up over some hot soup.
