Horatio Phillips' The Feb 28, 1908 issue of "Engineering" published a letter from Horatio Phillips in which he detailed, for the first time, his 1907 Multiplane flying machine. Alongside the letter appeared two photographs of the Multiplane. Here are those photographs, as published in "Engineering". Of the two, one has been frequently used to illustrate the Multiplane, whilst the other seems to have fallen into obscurity. Indeed, I'm not aware of the second photo having been published since it's original 1908 appearance in "Engineering". The image below is the one that's normally used to illustrate the 1907 Multiplane.

This close-up was done by the staff of the Open University's "Flight Flight" website. This site contains further information about Horatio Phillips and his aircraft. I am not good at image manipulation, so people are cordially invited to download the original scanned image (300dpi, 24-bit colour, 1.3MB) to see if they can obtain better results from the scan. Please email me with the results. Click here for the original scan
