Apollonia from Ano Petali
Apollonia, the capital town, sits on a group of foothills under the island's two highest peaks, each topped with a monastery. Sea views to east and west complete a dramatic setting for the six villages making up the town. This village, Apollonia, is the town's geographical and commercial core, and has some of the loveliest and most classically Cycladic streets and buildings. Each village has at least one church; this picture shows at least five (three blue domes and two 'cutout' belltowers); the island has over 300.
