Ayos (Saint) Simeon Monastery, above Kamares. That's the monastery of Profit Ilias Troulaki in the distance. The island has over 300 monasteries and churches, many of them on hilltops and other dramatic locations. Each has a Saint's Day festival, or panigieri, to which one and all are invited, consisting of a church service followed by a hearty free dinner quite possibly involving revithia (chickpea soup) and, as often as not, many hours of dancing to the sound of a wonderfully scrapy violin.
