Hundreds of kilometres of drywall crisscross the island, holding back terraces or creek banks or fencing in livestock or defining boundaries or serving as walls in most of the old stone buildings and many of the new - all built without mortar. A recent construction boom has revived the craft, in danger of dying out just twenty years ago. These examples are quite old and relatively crude but, even so, a lot more satisfying than brickwork.
