Report by Michael Pilcher

Some seven weeks after the Mount last kicked a ball in anger, they returned to action and it was almost as if they’d never been away. Sharks, relegated from Division 1 and boosted by a Sunday Session ringer in their line-up, showed their quality and ran out 7-0 winners. As  is so often the case, the score-line didn’t reflect the performance.

Initially things were fairly even. Ryan Charman, starting up front, linked up well with brother Sam and went on many a surging run forward. Jimbo Rose charged down the left flank at will, but the trio never really tested the Sharks keeper. Five minutes in and Sharks had the lead, a good finish from a central position.
Ben came on after the second goal was scored and put in some great tackles on their striker. How their third goal stood no-one knows; their winger over-ran the ball before shooting a good couple of steps inside the area. Good old Steve the ref: back to his old tricks. Goal number four definitely couldn’t be argued with though – a superb strike which left Spence with no chance. Half time: 4-0.

Sharks slowed things down but still managed to rack up another three goals, due to what can only be described as a crazy 90-second spell from Spencer mid-way through the half. One weak shot went through his legs; then a shot from distance which was hit straight towards Spence seemed to elude him; and then a tame mid-cued shot from the Sharks striker trickled past.

Not the best of performances but they had, in spells, matched a team who were playing in the division above a matter of months ago.

Manager's Comments:
"We were playing a side with quality throughout their team and are favourites to go straight back up. Three of their goals I can’t really explain, I don’t know what Spence was doing. Hopefully that’s his eccentric moments for the season out of the way.

There were bound to be problems after so long away, we’re a team that needs to be playing every week to build up some momentum, and it’s unfortunate we’ve been scheduled to play one of the league’s best teams in the first game."
