Shotgun........................7 Tantamount FC...........1 |

Report by Sam Charman | ||||||||||||
After last weeks football lesson, The Mount returned for week two with new tactics a new formation and a full squad to choose from as Alex Jacobs made his debut. They were rewarded with the perfect start, Charman playing in the centre of a back three finding Jacobs in space who unleashed a low shot, too hot for the keeper to handle, spilling into his own goal, 30 seconds gone and unbelievably The Mount had their first ever goal since reforming and with it the lead. The delayed reaction from the travelling support summed up the surprise, Jacobs the only man on the park who realised the little bit of history he'd just made.
Some resolute defending followed as Tantamount looked to protect the lead, the new back three formation of Moody, Rose and Charman initially holding firm against the waves of attack. However the class of the two division one ringers playing for the opposition eventually shone through, at times seemingly going past The Mount's defence at will. The goals inevitably followed as the pace and skill of the opponents ran The Mounts wearied legs even further, the introduction of Howarth and Pilcher at the back kept things tighter but Spencer was off his best, helping the opposition rack up a 7-1 final victory as The Mount were restricted to long shots and half chances, finally suffering the ultimate humiliation of the opposing goalie playing on pitch. One positive however is that the regular players were nowhere near as good as the Div One ringers and with the improvements that come with more games The Mount can definitely push this team close next time round.

Manager's Comments: | ||||||||||||
"It wasn't the greatest performance but I'm pleased that we have broken our scoring duck. It was a well taken goal and it was good to see Alex putting us ahead so early on. From that point on though it was all downhill; we never looked entirely comfortable. They had a lot of flash players that we didn't seem able to handle - we can deal with being pummelled against the walls, but can't cope with dummies and stepovers. Defensively we were a bit unorganised at times and I feel responsible for the 3rd and 4th goals, but there wasn't that big a gulf between the teams. We just need to give Spence a bit more protection in goal - after half-time we pretty much gave up. We're not going to win the game from 4-1 down but it would have been nice to at least make some attempt to keep the score down. The newboys are improving which is good. Ben in getting used to the pace; Modders is like a young Steve Claridge, holding up the ball well, and his level of fitness is excellent. We got forward a bit more this game and weren't afraid to shoot, and we've got that first goal, so there were some positives." |
