The Irish Rovers
of Budapest was formed in 1992, when Patrick
McMullan (guitarist - vocalist) has arrived
in Hungary. Varga Mónika,
the bodhran player introduced Patrick
to Pejtsik Péter
of After Crying, an already well-established cellist. They began to play
and arrange some Irish folk songs and traditional pieces for guitar and
violin. The trio was joined by an English whistle player - Kevin
Bown - for a short time. When Kevin
left Hungary a new fourth member was brought in: Ferenc
Torma (who has joined After Crying later),
who plays the bouzouki. The band gave concerts in Hungarian universities
and music clubs. They have been featured in some TV shows as well. In 1994
they have recorded their debut album titled: "BRIDGES
& RIVERS".
This album is containing ten tracks, including as instrumental as vocal
pieces.
Since we know that
Irish folk has been the craddle of rock music, and maybe the only progressive
folk in the whole universe it is not so surprising when you hear Irish
folk including rock and progressive elements. On the other hand it is shocking
when you face the fact that the roots of the so called XXth century modern
music is nothing but Irish folk. This album is far better than you may
think based on its publicity.
