Captain James T. Kirk strode (well, waddled) confidently (OK, more slowly) into the open door of Lt. Cmdr Spock's office.

"Spock, do you have the newest engine design files?" he called out rather loudly as he shut the door behind him.

"I do not have those files, Jim. Mr. Scott is reviewing you recommendations," Spock responded, then stood up quickly and took the required steps to reach his bondmate as Kirk's face crumpled as he clutched his well rounded tummy. "Jim, what is wrong?"

Sniffle. "It's nothing, Spock." Kirk rubbed his nose on his sleeve, then accepted Spock's handkerchief. "I'm so glad you decided to start carrying these."

"I am pleased to be able to assist you; however, you will not change the subject that easily."

Kirk smiled, somehow managing to look sheepish and sad at the same time. "Oh, Spock. You know me too well."

Spock put his arm around Kirk's erstwhile waist and led him, gently, to the couch. He sat down next to him and kissed him gently on the forehead as Kirk rested his head against the warm, flat chest. They sat still for a few minutes as Kirk sniffled and Spock waited.

"It's just.."

...

"It's just not fair."

...

Kirk turned his face up to look into Spock's eyes. "Don't you want to know what isn't fair?"

"Certainly Jim. I am waiting for you to tell me."

Sniff. "Oh. All right." Kirk settled his head back on Spock's chest and his arms across his tummy. "It's just not fair that Pamela got to have her baby today."

"She has been prepared for this day for several weeks. Why is that unfair?"

"She, she...she gets to see her baby before we do!" Kirk began to sob. Spock rocked him gently, stroking his hair away from his flushed face. "It's just not fair."

"I do not understand, t'hy'la. We shall see our child as soon as she is ready."

Kirk wailed and rocked in Spock's arms. "But I wanna see our little April."

"We will see her in only a few more weeks, Jim."

"But I don't want to wait. Why does Pamela get to go first? I think Abigail is ready. Maybe Dr. McCoy could talk the obstet, the ob...

the other doctor into letting us have her today."

"Jim, please calm down. You have trouble completing your words when you are so upset. I do not believe that Dr. McCoy would wish you to give birth before the child is fully developed."

"No, he wouldn't, would he. But little Jasmine wants to be born today, don't you honey?" he responded sadly. "Hmm, Spock.

Maybe we could name her Honey?"

"So far you have suggested four names today. None of which are on the list you made yesterday. Perhaps we should go home. I could fix you some herbal tea and we could consider our child's name." Spock spoke softly in a reassuring tone.

Kirk nodded. "That would be nice. Could you rub my back, too?

It's sore again."

"I will rub your back and you feet, if you desire it."

"Oh, Spock. You are so good to me."

"Do you need anything from your office before we leave?"

"No, the only thing I left there is Pamela's room number." Kirk's face fell as he remembered the cause of his sadness. Sniffle, sob.

"That was a good try, beloved. But she still gets her baby first.

Why does she get to go first? I'm ready, look as this huge tummy."

Spock placed one hand on the rise of Kirk's tummy. "You look beautiful to me, Jim. But not quite ready to give birth. Pamela has been pregnant longer, Jim. She started before you."

"Oh, that's true. Why didn't we start first? Then we could be at the hospital now."

"Our daughter was conceived as soon as we were prepared for it," Spock sighed a most unvulcanly sigh. "We did not know Pamela at that point. Even if we had, we were constrained by your hormonal status and the timing of the end of the 5 yr mission."

"I want my baby!" Kirk wailed.

Spock merely stroked his head, remembering in time not to make the comforting noises that had soothed Kirk earlier in his pregnancy. Spock had learned all too clearly that Kirk currently considered "Shh" to be an unwelcome order, not a loving reassurance. Soon Kirk had cried out his sadness and slumped against Spock.

"Jim, we have our baby. She is inside you. I can see her moving within you. Watch, now."

"Aww. I can feel it too."

"She will be in your arms soon, but now she is even closer to you, Jim."

Kirk rubbed his tummy lightly with both palms, then pulled Spock's hand down, placing it over a small moving bulge. "That might be her hand, Spock."

Spock stroked the spot lightly, then settled his hand on his bondmates tummy.

"And, you know what?"

"Jim?"

"She can be Pamela's baby's best friend!"
