4. Seem to be the only ones in the group that have a monogamous relationship, and are faithfull to each other. (Given the general notion that homosexuals are sex-starved predators, that really came as a welcome change.) The advent of the Apollo and the Midnighter, as a committed, accepted and powerful pair of gay superheroes meant a lot to me, even more so when I realized that the title's growing popularity ensured that many other people would be reading it. |

Many of them gay readers struggling with their own sexuality, as I had years before, and finding that the image of a gay guy doesn't have to be confined to the role of the funny abomination. Indeed could be as heroic, self sacrificing and loyal as any hetero-superhero. Apollo and the Midnighter represent a step towards a fair portrayal of gays in comics, however small. - |

Warren Ellis's portrayal of these two characters, and his confirmation of their relationship generated a lot of debate among the readers, but unlike the writer who originally presented us with Sarah Rainmaker's alternate sexuality, Ellis did not back down - and for that Warren Ellis and his editors deserve praise. I'm very grateful to Ellis for giving us Apollo and the Midnighter, and for Mark Millar, for not screwing with them, and I'm very curious to see what the upcoming creative teams' have in store for the Authorty, and for Apollo and the Midnighter's relationship in particular. I seriously hope they handle these characters well and with respect. |
