A/MH-6 Little Birds provide a vertical take-off and landing (V/TOL) capability critical towards inserting/extracting small teams of men and getting seriously wounded casualties out without having to wait for an airstrip or ground vehicle to become available. MASH type people casevac pods must be utilized on the troop seat planks. Since Little Birds provide the critical land-almost-anywhere capability of the NLMB, we must maximize this potential by not having tail rotors that can get fowled in trees and power lines. NOTAR Little Birds are controversial within the Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment who say they sacrifice power/payload. We disagree and insist that the benefits of not having a tail rotor outweigh some power/payload loss. Particularly STEALTH; a NOTAR Little Bird can be 500 feet above you and you will not hear it. NLMB NOTAR Little Birds can fly above effective AKM small arms fire range (300 meters) and be completely stealthy to see the bad guys first and not be detected, evaded and shot down.
