This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a tea or strong boiled decoction. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Devil's Claw root for 'Loss of appetite, dyspepsia, supportive therapy of degenerative disorders of the locomotor system. Contraindications: Gastric and duodenal ulcers. With gallstones, use only after consultation with a physician.' Daily dosage: For loss of appetite: 1.5 g of drug; preparations of equivalent bitter value; Otherwise: 4.5 g drug; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted drug for teas and other preparations for internal use.' 'Actions: Appetite-stimulating; Choleretic; Antiphlogistic; Mildly analgesic.' Africans have used the herb for centuries. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recognizes Devil's claw as possessing analgesic, sedative and diuretic properties. The Devil's Claw root (tuber) contains the iridoid glycosides harpagoside, harpagide and procumbine, plus beta sitosterol, sugars and gum resin. Harpagoside and other iridoid glycosides seem to be responsible for the herb's anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions. Studies have shown strong anti-inflammatory properties helpful for arthritis, joint, ligament and tendon problems. Devil's claw often helps with joint pain while improving joint vitality. A clinical study carried out in Germany in 1976 reported that Devil's claw exhibited anti-inflammatory activity comparable to the well-known anti-arthritic drug phenylbutazone. Analgesic effects were also observed along with reductions in abnormally high cholesterol and uric-acid blood levels. Devil's claw is also a potent bitter. The iridoid glycosides found in devil's claw stimulate the production of stomach acid, thereby helping to improve digestion and relieve indigestion.

Devil's Claw is a valuable plant that has been found effective in the treatment of arthritis. This is very likely due to a glycoside called harpagoside that reduces inflammation in the joints. This plant also aids in liver and gall bladder problems. Devil's Claw is harvested from the wild in the Kalahari Desert and Nubian steppes of Africa. It produces lovely blossoms, but it also produces a thorny seedpod which clings tenaciously to anything it touches. It must survive 9 months of drought each year, and to do so produces a very deep root with one or two sets of potato-like tubers which store water and nutrients. Devil’s Claw contains harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide, from the iridoid glycoside family, which may be responsible for the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving action of the herb, which is suggested for arthritic conditions including inflammation and pain and may also be used as a bitter to stimulate digestion.
