Other skills
That's because he plans to stay in this business for a long time. To survive this competitive world, acquiring other skills is an advantage. For example, Eddie Garcia reinvented himself as an actor many times, and even developed his skills as a director.
Marvin reveals that he's now working on a script for "Maalaala Mo Kaya" under the guidance of director Jerry Sineneng.
As for directing, he's learning on the set by observing how his directors work. But he doesn't disregard the merits of formal schooling. In fact, he plans to enroll in a directing course abroad.
Hardworking
Marvin may not have the striking good looks that can launch a successful show biz career in an instant, but he is hardworking, humble, dedicated and devoted not just to his goals but to the people who handle his career.
There has been intrigues like his allegedly siring a kid out of wedlock or his rift with screen partner Jolina Magdangal's camp. Marvin clarifies the first rumor: "He's my nephew, that's why he has a striking resemblance to me." The issue has died a natural death.
On the second, Marvin maintains that everything's fine now with him and Jolina. They're set to do two films together, "Gimik: The Movie" and "Hey, Babes," which they are now filming.
Accolades
Marvin will be celebrating his third year in show business this April. His stint in the business has been fruitful and productive. He has won critical accolades for his sensitive performance in "Ipaglaban Mo: The Movie" and was cited as Best New Movie Actor of the Year at the 1997 Star Awards.
One of Marvin's memorable portrayals on TV was as Ruben in the first Star mini-series, "Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako." The series became a top-rater, so ABS-CBN has decided to produce its Book II.
Of course, Marvin is still with the top-rating "Esperanza." Doesn't he get tired playing the same character for such a long time? "Hindi naman," Marvin replies. "Ang totoo, parang mas masarap nga dahil alam mo na 'yung character. The challenge is how to grow with the character, so that it doesn't become stale."
