Of Love and Friendship

Labs Kita...Okey Ka Lang? is a heartwarming and likable lovestory. It's got touching portrayals, a scenic location, songs that complement the theme and a host of interesting details that are worth noticing.

Shot entirely in Baguio, it starts when best of friends, Bujoy (Jolina Magdangal) and Ned (Marvin Agustin) enter college. She is an insecure artist. He is a struggling musician-composer. Neighbors since childhood, they've developed a closeness often interpreted as romantic. Friends would tease them, but Ned would insist that Bujoy is not girlfriend material, completely missing the pained look in his bestfriend's eyes.

Yes, it's a reprise of the friends-and-lovers theme, with a light and fresh treatment. Bujoy and Ned's characters are given a deeper context by including the problems in their respective families. Bujoy's father had just died. Ned's parents are constantly fighting.

Providing just the right dose of humor are wisecracks and antics by Vhong Navarro and Meryll Soriano who essays the role of a trying hard fashion plate without resorting to exaggeration. (Is Meryll's character an illusion to Jolina's trendsetter image?) My personal favorite is the choice of name for Ned's band - Landslide sa Kennon. Speaking of band, most of the members aren't convincing; they hardly touched the musical instruments. making them look more than a bit awkward.

Jolina and Marvin give sincere performances. They seemed to enjoy eating Pringles potato chips dipped in Coke, that I am tempted to try the concoction myself. Seriously, Jolina mentioned in an interview that they enjoyed making the movie and it shows in the natural and effortless way she and Marvin interact with each other. Even their confrontation scenes are not heavy on the heart. Worth pointing out too, are the touching moments between the parents and the children - Jolina with Hilda Koronel (who starred in another love story shot in Baguio, entitled, Kung Mangarap Ka't Magising) and Marvin with Ronaldo Valdez and Gina Pareno. Among Ned and Bujoy's group of friends, Gio Alvarez and Vanessa del Bianco's characters stand out.

To those who think that this is just another "kilig" movie meant to please the fans, guess again. It's not only about falling in love with a friend. It's also about understanding your parents and finding one's welf-worth.

Labs Kita...Okey Ka Lang? contains a couple of twists and surprises, worthy of shedding a few tears of joy. It's a film that will make you laugh, cry, and wish you could be in that blissful state of pure, innocent love.
