Aleka's Attick
The mostly punk band Aleka's Attick was founded in 1987 by River Phoenix and Josh Greenbaum in Gainesville, Florida. They weree joined by River's sister Rain, Josh McKay and Tim Hankins shortly after. According to River, Aleka was an imaginary creature -the spirit of the band who provided the young musicians with inspiration and creativity.
Aleka's Attick started off playing at various local clubs and benifits sponsered by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) an organization River felt strongly about.
The band suffered in 1990 as a result of River's extensive absences during the shooting of "My Own Private Idaho," although the Aleka's Attick song "Too Many Colors" was featured on its soundtrack.
River took the band on a tour accross the states in an attempt to establish a reputation but unfortuantely, in 1991, both Tim Hankins and Josh McKay left frustrated to form another band, "Emperor Moth."
Whenever he was in L.A., River palyed music with his closest friends who included Flea ( from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), John Frusciante and Johnny Depp, co-owner of the night club, "The Viper Room" where River spent the last few hours of his life.
After filming "The Thing Called Love" The members of Aleka's Attick weree reunited and the band was reformed. Their last performance was at a pre-election rally for Clinton in Gainesville.
River Phoenix died on hallowe'en night in 1993 and with him went Aleka.
