Alex Attar:
Alex was born in Montreal, Quebec on December 13th, 1988. Except for a couple of years at the start of his life (the period of
time that no one remembers), he has always lived in Montreal. Since an early age, he has always had an interest in understanding how
things work. He would look at things to try and figure them out, sometimes taking them apart. As he got older, this fascination
combined with his other joy in life: video games.
Alex's new passion was to learn to develop video games. His first attempts ended
almost exclusively in failure. Before he had any concept of how to program a game, he and his friends would create designs and plans
for their ideal games. Alex, however soon realized their ignorance and questioned how they would actually make the games. A kid just
proposing the ideas to a game company would likely not be taken seriously, so he began his research. After browsing the internet for
game development tools, Alex found some that were specifically designed to allow anyone to create a game without programming. The
first he tried was called "The Games Factory". While it did serve as a good stepping stone upwards, the program suffered from severe
limitations with regard to what could be done and what was possible was tedious and rarely worked properly. He decided that this was
not what he wanted.
He moved to a program called "Game Maker". This program was much more organized and freeform. Games could easily be created
without any programming knowledge, but for the ambitious, it contained its own scripting language which allowed the user to program
outside of the pre-made events to create complex functions and loops. After adjusting to the interface, Alex started to learn the
scripting language. He mastered it with relative ease and since then has created a few small games with a larger one still in
production.
At about the same time that he discovered Game Maker, Alex also tried to learn C++, which is the language commonly used on the
video game industry. He would drop it more than once to continue pursuing his Game Maker creations. Recently however, he decided that
if he were to pursue game development as a career, it might be wiser to actually learn the industry's standard. So, Alex continued to
pursue C++, but with one major addition. He started to use the OpenGL library, which would allow him to use 3D drawing functions. He
is still learning to use the library and language efficiently, but he is constantly experimenting in a small 3D world he created.
Aside from video game development, Alex has a
small interest in music. He is told that he has his
grandfather's genes and may have talent in playing an
instrument, but he has never pursued it since his main interests
lie elsewhere. Instead he merely listens to music casually. His
music taste consists mainly of classic rock. The Beatles, The
Who, The Guess Who, and Led Zeppelin are prime examples of his
tastes, however he above all prefers progressive rock bands like
Pink Floyd and Rush. Alex's current life has
him attending John Abbott College, enrolled in the Science
program. While there he will spend his spare time at the
Bandersnatch school newspaper office, socializing with members
of the paper and helping with the production of the paper and
its website. |
