10km southeast of Papakura.Travel 7km along Hunua Rd. Turn left into Moumoukai Rd. Along the gravel road, though a gate and you arrive at a carpark where there is a map board, phone, toilets and maps.Track conditions-
Gravel roads and single track [mixture of gravel and dirt]My verdict-
The tracks are good for cross country with hills and tricky sections. They are well maintained, go through native bush and have great scenery.
TRACKS
5 Minute track
1.5km grade 3This is a very fast downhill single track. From the gate it's about A 2 minute drive down the hill as you come in. You'll see an open space and a single track start. It starts fast before flatting out. There are about 5 cool jumps that seem to get larger each time I do them!
Be careful when this track is wet there are pools of water waiting around any corner!
Valley loop travel/family trail
grade 1, 1-2hours, scenic 13km loop with detours of single track possible. From the carpark ride back and veer left hop over the gate to start the gravel/4wd track loop. At the end it goes into single track and crosses a stream. Turn left when you hit the gravel road.
Moumoukai Farms Tack
grade 3, 1-2 hours, 16 km loopThis is my favourite at Hunua. Most riders go straight to these tight and twisty tracks. Follow the directions for the valley loop track but turn right at the 'Moumoukai farms track ' signpost. You go though a paddock and into single track turn left at a 4wd road and then right into more single track, paddocks, and river crossings before hitting a gravel road. Turn right, then left onto another deviant single track. At the bottom turn left and then right. Follow the valley loop track back to the carpark.
Challenge/top track
Grade 4, 1-3h, scenic 14km loopLooking for a challenge! Then this track is for you. From the carpark ride north up the main gravel road, which climbs high above the dam for 5km. At the top of the hill, turn left into a 4WD track, which soon becomes a single track and traverses the main ridge with great views and gnarly little hills. At the next 4 intersections turn left. I don't recommend riding this track after lots of rain, ride it in the summer to make the most of it. [riding up steep, muddy slopes isn't fun!]
