Backstage with Charming King Alfred

Charming King Alfred  (Alfred Van Acker)

The youngest member of the group and the man behind the record label, Alfred is both a charming musician and an innovative producer of a diverse range of music. Disinclined to limit himself to any one specific type of music, he extends his tastes to include the best of boogie, jazz and beyond...

"It's all music!" Alfred insists when he hears criticism against any particular artist or song.

Good musicians are constantly challenging themselves, otherwise their music gets stale, and wherever King Alfred is involved, you can be sure to enjoy a sparkly performance with plenty of bright, cheeky humor. His charms include ludicrous double bass acrobatics, tantalising compositions tuning your ears to creative new sounds and lyrics virtually beyond the realms of plausibility.

Before becoming a full time musician and producer, there was a time when Alfred built stages for other artists.

"It was a stupid job and I decided I wanted to be the guy on that stage instead. I followed my heart and now music is my world. It was my first love and it will be my last."

Alfred's role in the Smoky Midnight Gang and Joey's Boogie Band is playing the double bass. He is the link between harmony and melody.

"I listen to the drummer and it's important that I feel the beat is right."

In every show there is of course a double bass solo too, varying from a thick thumping melody to a mere whisper... and look out for the Charming King Alfred riding his double bass on a particularly good night!

Back to the Castle

From the double bass to the electric bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals and composer, Alfred is a well rounded musician with a fresh outlook on the future. He works on a multitude of different projects with laudable enthusiasm. There is no time for holidays in his life; if he finds himself with a day or two free, he soon finds another musician to work with.

"Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing all this... driving from one gig to another, playing, composing, recording and mixing. Never a moment to myself. If I had more time, I could play the bass, write some lyrics, find an audience, produce a CD and... well, that's what I'm doing!"
