Ancient Words For Today - 14

Oh, how refreshing it is to drink from a pure mountain stream following a long hike to reach it. As our thirst is satisfied and we rest for a while, our physical vitality is restored, we are refreshed and able to continue our journey. So it is also with our walk in the spiritual realm; our spirits need daily refreshing which comes from our communion with the Lord and as we read the Word of God, which is our spiritual food.

After experiencing and enduring extreme personal calamities and God's continuing testing, in his anguish Job cried out:

My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside.
I have not departed from the commandment of His lips;
I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. Job 23:11-12

King David, speaking to the Lord, said:

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. Psalm 119: 9-12

It has been my experience that when I have missed my daily Bible devotion time or my communion with the Lord in prayer, I get spiritually weaker with each passing day. My spiritual vision and discernment grow progressively dimmer and I become more prone to stumble or stray from the Lord's path. God's presence can reverse this cycle and refresh us spiritually as we turn to Him.

Our pastor, speaking about the age-abiding power of the Word of God to transform our lives and keep us on track spiritually, told the congregation about an insightful inscription written inside the cover of a Bible which said "Reading this book will keep you from sin, but sin will keep you from reading this book." It has also been said that, "Seven days without God's Word makes one weak." I have personally experienced that both of these nuggets of wisdom are true.

We need the wisdom of God's word which is able to transform our life for the better as we follow it. And we need to commune with God, abide in Him, and rest in His wonderful grace. Then we will be refreshed and strengthened to continue our journey with Him.

Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to stay connected to You. As we commune with you, let your word and the presence of your Holy Spirit, refresh us and strengthen us so that we may continue to follow the path you have planned for us.
