Ancient Words For Today - 18
The days of our lives on earth are limited, yet we often act as though we are going to live for ever. We delay doing important things, thinking we will do them another time, perhaps when it's more convenient. We often spend our days accomplishing those things that are not important in lieu of those that are. We spend time in activities that satisfy our physical needs but so often we neglect to feed our spiritual beings and to do those things that are eternally important.
If our Doctor advised us we had only two weeks left to live, most of us would try to prioritize and accomplish the most important things during the days we had left. Of course, the most important thing for anyone would be to make certain they are ready to meet their creator. If a person hasn't received Christ as their savior and received forgiveness of their sins, they are not ready to stand before God. So that would need to be the first priority!
But, assuming we are Christians already, what would be our next priority? Shouldn't we be greatly concerned about our loved ones, friends and others who don't know Jesus Christ? Shouln't we share with them the good news that God loves them and God's plan of salvation and invite them to receive Christ as their savior? Could there be anything more important than assuring that they will one day join us in heaven?
And what about all the special abilities and resources God has given us to share with others? Have we done so? Or perhaps we have been too busy to share our gifts and resources with others that have need of them? What can we do, in the short time we have left, to accomplish God's purpose for our lives?
If these issues are important to us, we can join with Moses in his prayer to God: "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Psalm 90:12 Recognizing that we have only a short time on earth helps us to focus on accomplishing the most important things and those that will have eternal consequences. We can seek wisdom from the Lord to establish our priorities, asking Him to guide us to accomplish His will. Then, one day when we meet Him in heaven, we will hear Him say, "Well done my good and faithful servant."
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
