Putting confidence in ourselves or in other persons is something we are accustomed to doing almost every day of our lives. For example, consider the familiar routine of waking up in the morning, sitting at the table to enjoy breakfast, and later getting into your vehicle to go to work? Think about it:
- you trusted that the architect and builder of your home designed and constructed it in such a manner that it is safe and wouldn't collapse on your head while you slept;
- that the chair manufacturer used strong materials, fasteners and sound manufacturing methods so that it wouldn't buckle under your weight;
- that the food you eat is not laced with insecticides, unsafe bacteria or other harmful components;
- that your automobile is roadworthy and will not fail while you are driving it. You are also trusting the other drivers on the road that they will not crash into your vehicle;
- that the company you work for is still solvent and your job has not been eliminated when you arrive.
Yes, we place a lot of confidence and trust in other people and in ourselves. But man is not perfect - mistakes happen, errors are common, people sometimes let us down or do bad things that we can't even begin to imagine. Oftentimes we ourselves overestimate our own abilities and we fall short of our goals and fail. But there is one in whom we can always count on - God that is - and so often we fail to call upon Him or ask for His help until we encounter problems or situations that we can't handle ourselves or with the help of others. God has promised us that He will never forsake those who call upon Him. Here are some of the other promises God has made if we will only trust in Him and believe and do what He tells us:
I LOVE YOU (John 3:16 & John 13:34)
I FORGIVE YOU (I John 1:9 & Romans 8:1)
MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT (II Corinthians 12:9 & Psalm 91:15)
All things which are impossible with men are possible with God. (Luke 18:27)
I've given everyone a measure of faith (Romans 12:3)
I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30)
I give you wisdom (I Corinthians 1:30)
I will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5-6)
I will strengthen you (Philippians 4:13)
I will supply all your needs (Philippians 4:19)
I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7)
Cast all your cares on ME (I Peter 5:7)
I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU OR FORSAKE YOU (Hebrews 13:5)
Knowing all this, it is easy to conclude that: It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man! (Psalm 118:8) So, remember to seek God's wise counsel in all that you do. Ask Him to guide you and show you His perfect will for your life. Ask Him to work in your life, teach you His ways and perfect you. And while you are doing this, remember to enjoy the rich fellowship with God that He desires you to have, as He showers you with His blessings and love.
