Ancient Words For Today - 75

When the sun's light enters a dark room, the contents - previously veiled in darkness - are suddenly made visible by the light.

When the Son's Light enters the heart of a person living in spiritual darkness, hidden sins are exposed by the light of God's truth.

The apostle John identified Jesus as the Word of God, the Creator of all things, and the true Light that gives light to every person:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:1-14

Jesus identified Himself as the Light of the World:

"I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12

"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46

He also said: For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. John 3:17-21

John declared: This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1John 1:5-7

One way to determine if we are walking in the Light is to consider whether we have love in our hearts for others. John said: He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 1John 2:9-11

Finally, Jesus told His followers to let their light shine: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son Jesus into the world to shine the Light of Your truth upon our hearts. Thank you for enlightening us to our sins and spiritual darkness and leading us into Your Kingdom of Truth and Light through faith in your Son Jesus. Help us to be bright and shining lights in this dark world as we share your love and truth with those still in darkness. Amen.

The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Proverbs 4:18
