Kutcher Got New Look For TV Role

AMANA, Iowa (AP) - Ashton Kutcher liked the retro look better when it was his choice instead of his uniform. Kutcher, one of the stars of Fox's "That '70s Show," said he wore bellbottoms and polyester shirts when he was a model in New York. But when he got the job playing Michael Kelso - a big, dumb guy with puka shell necklaces - he had to change his wardrobe. "I wanted to have a different identity than my character, so I couldn't wear them any more. I had to buy new clothes. I was kind of bummed about that," he said Sunday. Kutcher, 20, who went to high school in Amana, recalls his jobs sweeping up dust at the General Mills plant in Cedar Rapids and working at local restaurants. His Iowa background has made him less tolerant of people he meets who grew up in Hollywood's decidedly showier lifestyle. "They're making umpteen thousand dollars a week and they're not happy with it," he said. "I'm like, 'How can you not be happy?' I mean, I was never able to buy a new car. I washed dishes in a kitchen in Homestead. I worked in a butcher shop skinning deer, jobs like that. You can't believe how ungrateful people can be."
