Hometown: Homestead, Iowa (population 100), where his father, a factory worker for General Mills, and mother, a plant employee for Proctor & Gamble, raised three kids. "People in Hollywood don't really know much about the Midwest," says Kutcher. "I grew up on a farm with my sister (Tausha, now at the University of Northern Iowa) and twin brother (Micheal, a buisness major at a community college in Cedar Rapids, Iowa). When I tell people where I'm from, they say, 'Oh, the potato state. 'No, that's Idaho."
Current Residence: a two-bedroom apartment in West Hollywood.
He has been compared to: a young John Travolta. "I get that all the time. I told my agent, 'I have to meet this guy. If I'm being compared to him, I want to know what he's like."
Career breakthrough: After a year of studying biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa, he won the 1997 Fresh Faces of Iowa contest, then began modeling for a Calvin Klein jeans campaign. "I didn't even know guys modeled before that. I thought Fabio was the only male model, and I really didn't fit that bill."
Romantic Status: "I'm dating someone, but I'm going to stay mysterious about it."
How he feels about his almost-overnight success: "I feel bad, in a way, because so many people struggle for so long out here before it happens. But I don't believe that old cliche that good things come to those who wait. I think good things come to those who want something so bad they can't sit still."
