A brief note on intellectual property rights:

The Alliance for Progress Encyclopedia is a wholly derivative work, dependent on earlier writings.

The creator and ultimate copyright holder for the Uplift milieu is David Brin. His publisher is Bantam. His books are widely available at your on-line or local bookstore in the Science Fiction section.

An Uplift role-playing supplement for GURPS was written by Stefan Jones in the early 1990's. This book is now out of print. The copyright is held by Steve Jackson Games.

However --the organization, and much more than half the information in the first edition of Encyclopedia, was directly borrowed from web sites created by Stewart Blandón and Tim Robinson.

The reader should note that all works by Brin are by definition "canonical" statements about the fictional reality of the Uplift milieu. After all, he invented it and owns it. Those by Jones are deutero-canonical --meaning that they are "official" pronouncements unless contradicted by Brin. Blandòn and Robinson make every effort to remain orthodox, by which I mean they try not to go beyond the bounds of the cannon.

However, this information has been prepared --in part --as background for my own Uplift role-playing campaign. Large amounts of the material that you will find herein go beyond what is strictly canonical (indeed, the whole trope of an Alliance for Progress Encyclopedia is peculiar to this site), while a few statements directly contradict the Brin-Jones canon.

In short, I assume no responsibility for any heretical opinions or beliefs you may contract as a result of perusing text contained in this site.

Still, any errors, omissions, or (hopefully inadvertent) insults are my responsibility alone.

Conventions

For the most part I have made every effort to consistently maintain the conceit of a (low tech) visit to a very small branch of the Galactic Library as it might be enhanced and mediated by a bureaucracy called the Terragen Confederation Information Agency.

This implies that certain information available to those of us who have read David Brin's uplift novels would not be available. This is particularly true of the Jijo trilogy and Sundiver.

Some of this sort of information (for instance, what we --as readers --learn in Sundiver) is presented as information restricted to those with appropriate security clearances. (I guess you must be very important because you get to read all of them.)

At other points --for example when discussing events on Jijo --I have opted to leave the information from the Blandón or Robinson sites intact, but have printed it in strikeout text. I have also used a few footnotes.

Throughout the Encyclopedia, the general format is Main Entry (Arial), Open Reply (Times New Roman), and Secret Comments (Courier New). In the brief chronology I have used small script for those events that primarily concern Earthlings. It is also used to index "secondary" bodies in star systems. Links yet to be linked are rendered in bright purple/dark lavender. When it has proven necessary to insert authoritorial comments that cannot be easily incorporated into the master trope, I have used a Bauhaus font.

Enjoy your VISIT to this site.
