BRIEF The Mini 4wd Hobby is known by different names depending on the country where you live. In Japan it is more popularly known as Mini Yonku, and in the United States as Fence Car Racing. Some people even call it "Let's Go" or "Let's & Go" racing, after the popular cartoon series produced in Japan.
Tamiya is the most popular brand for these 1/32 scale racers. Primarily for the fact that it was responsible for its design and creation sometime in the mid 1980's and became widely popular in 1990 or 1991 - The first cars being small versions of the more popular 1/10 scale RC line that it used to produce. Other popular brands include Academy from Korea, Auldey, TWINKK and Gokey from China, Okami from Japan and HJH from Taiwan.

A combination of several vehicles and hop-up parts from several brands, the vehicle on the left which I call the Sonic Tank, works because of a system of gears connected to the main gearbox. The vehicle on the right is a Super 1 chassis converted to a trike. If you want to experiment, use the cheaper brands as performance will be basically the same and you get to save some money if you break some parts.
Unlike its predecessors, the current line of Mini 4WD vehicles are highly competitive and comes in various designs. The cars are built mainly as a mechanical model for some and as competitive machines for others, the latter being the more popular. Its popularity lies in the fact that it is cheap compared to the 1/10 scale RC's, but moreso a challenge to assemble one that will keep on the tracks and consequently win races.
All in all, it's a good hobby that encourages the development of responsibility for kids as they need to care for their cars. Further, it creates a venue for Father and Son bonding at not so high a cost.
