Alpha Gamma Delta started as a dorm room discussion of college friendships between two sisters and grew into an international sisterhood of thousands of friends on and off the college campus. It grew into Alpha Gamma Delta.

The two sisters, Marguerite and Estelle Shepard, talked of the need for a new women's fraternity on the Syracuse University campus.

Alpha Gamma Delta was officially founded on May 30, 1904 by 11 women.

1904
Five organizational meetings were held in May during which the name and first Badge design were selected.
Official Founding: May 30. Badges worn for the first time; colors of red, buff and green chosen; first Fraternity songs presented and sung.

The Epsilon Pi motto, a pledge pin design and the present Badge design were adopted.

1905
First chapter house leased.
Red and buff roses chosen as Fraternity flowers.
Certificate of Incorporation recorded in New York on June 3. Charter granted to Beta Chapter, University of Wisconsin.

1906
Skiouros made its first appearance as a mascot with the installation of Gamma Chapter at Wesleyan University, Middletown Connecticut.

1907
First National Convention, during which the Rituals, Constitution and Armorial Bearings were adopted.

1909
With the installation of Iota Chapter, University of Washington, the Fraternity spanned the continent.
First issue of the
Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly was published.
Fraternity admitted to membership in National Panhellenic Conference (then National Panhellenic Congress).

1912
First Songbook published.
Iota purchased the first chapter-owned house.

1913
Present pledge pin design authorized and Official Jeweler selected.

1915
Alumnae advisors to undergraduate chapters authorized.
First officer handbook published.
First Convention Feast of Roses held.
Delta Chapter established the first Mother's Club.

1917
Lifetime subscription to the Quarterly authorized.

1919
Fraternity became International with the chartering of Tau Chapter, University of Toronto.
Honors of Epsilon Pi established.
Rose Bowl Award for scholarship presented to the Fraternity by the Founders.
First International Altruistic Project adopted: a summer camp for underprivileged children.
Alumnae work reorganized to provide for Alumnae Chapters and Clubs.

1920
First summer camp opened at Jackson, Michigan.

1923 Endowment Fund to provide loans for chapter housing established.
Executive Council structure created.

1926
First full-time Chapter Inspector.

1927
Central Office established in New York City.

1929
Silver Anniversary Convention.

1936
International Reunion Day established as third Saturday in April, replacing Founders Day which had been celebrated traditionally on May 30.

1945
Life Membership Alumnae Dues established.

1947
Counselor Training Program for rehabilitation of the handicapped adopted as International Altruistic Project.

1954
Golden Anniversary Convention.
Louise Leonard Fund established to provide emergency financial aid to alumnae in need.
Central Office moved to New Jersey.

1957
Design for Alpha Gamma Delta Flag approved.

1959
Founders Memorial Fund established for scholarship grants.
Central Office name changed to International Headquarters.
Theta Sigma Upsilon merged with Alpha Gamma Delta.
Distinguished Citizen Awards presented for the first time.

1964
Alpha Gamma Delta Founders Memorial Foundation received federal approval: scholarship and altruism funds incorporated into the Foundation.
Alpha Gamma Delta Rehabilitation Project established and children with minimal brain damage selected as the first recipient.
Purchase of the first Fraternity-owned International Headquarters authorized by Convention.

1965
International Headquarters moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.

1967
Chapter Consultant program began.

1974
50 Year Pin approved.

1979
Diamond Anniversary Convention.
Juvenile Diabetes Foundation approved as the Fraternity philanthropy.
Construction completed on new International Headquarters building in Indianapolis.

1983
Junior Circle program and Rose Sisters program established as part of the alumnae organization.

1985
The Fraternity's wellness program, "It's Okay to Care" developed.

1987
Foundation celebrated 25th Anniversary.
The Leadership Manual for undergraduate officers and advisors developed.

1988
Co-educational social concerns workshop, "Double Vision" funded by the Foundations of Alpha Gamma Delta and Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

1989
The Alumnae Leadership Manual developed for alumnae officers.

1990
Founders Memorial Foundation name changed to Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

The Chapter Consultant name changed to Leadership Consultant.

1991
Grand Council name changed to International Council.

1992
"The New Older Woman" program launched for members to help shape a more healthy future.

1993
Eight-week new member program implemented in all chapters.
Personal Development program: "From Classroom to Boardroom" established.
"Alpha Gam Always" program organized.
25 Year Pin approved.

1994
2004 Committee appointed to help develop a blueprint for the future.

1996
"See Through the Haze: To a Clearer Purpose" anti-hazing program introduced.
