Hoggle. What's there to say about him? He's good for comic relief, and he's also the one that really teaches Sarah about freindship, learning about it for himself at the same time. He's scared of Jareth, but if he thinks he can get away with doing something, he'll do it. And, he's got a fondness for "jewels," which he keeps in a small pouch attatched to his belt.
Hoggle is a dwarf, and seems mean-spirited and selfish until Sarah declares him her friend. As he says himself, he'd never had a friend before that point. It's a growth point for both Sarah and Hoggle.
Nobody is quite sure why Hoggle is so protective of his jewels. Perhaps, like Sarah and her need to keep everything straight and ordered, Hoggle uses them as a security blanket. Or perhaps, as a dwarf, keeping jewels is a natural instinct. Whatever the reason, a dwarf and his jewels can't seem to be parted, except, of course, by a tricky mortal trying to get to the castle.
