Sarah Williams. Here's what we know. She's fifteen, hates her step-mother Karen, hates her half-brother Toby, loves fantasy, is distant from her father Robert, and was abandoned at a young age by her actress mother Linda.

But what else is there to the main female character of Labyrinth? Is she the protagonist or the antagonist? We know that in her own mind, she's the heroin. She feels like she's treated like Cinderella by her step-mother, and that Jareth is the villain who has kidnapped Toby. Nevermind that she ASKED Jareth to take him.

On the other hand, she can also be seen as a rotton, immature little brat. She's disrespectful to her step-mother, yells at Toby when he's probably just scared by the storm. She's consistantly late because she never pays attention to what she's doing or to the time, and seems to care more for her dog, Merlin, than for her family.

And yet we see these aspects of her change throughout the movie. When she realizes her mistake, she could have initially gone to run the labyrinth for selfish reasons, like saving her own neck, but eventually she realizes she truly loves Toby.

Let's take a look at Sarah's development throughout the movie. When we first see her, she's in the park, dressed in a midieval style dress, and holding a copy of Labyrinth. She recites the lines as if she's rehearsing for a play, but the dress gives away she's only play-acting from a favorite novel. At fifteen, she should have long ago outgrown such make-believe, so perhaps she's reverted to fantasy because in her fantasy world, she doesn't have to deal with Karen and Toby, and instead she has her mother back? It's highly probable.

She learns many things as she travels through the labyrinth. She learns patience from dealing with Hoggle in just the first few moments of her journey. She learns to listen when dealing with Willum the worm. And, along the way, after encountering cleaners, oubliettes, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and the giant machine operated by the goblin at the gates to the Goblin City, she's learned the true value of friendship. She has obviously matured.

In one of the last scenes, Sarah gives Toby her beloved teddybear, Lancelot. She has finally realized just how childish she's been.

But what of her feelings towards Jareth? She definately had a crush on him before her adventure in the Underground. She even had a look of sadness when she told him he had no power over her, as if she knew she was destroying him by rescuing her brother. Whether it was just a crush, or if she was genuinly in love with the Goblin King, however, can be seen only in fanfiction.
