On Vacation

I remember as a child the excitement of going on vacation. Now as a parent I am the one that needs to do the planning. Just because one is one vacation is no reason to become slack in regard to safety. Taking a few minutes to plan can lessen chances of you becoming a victim of crime on your vacation.

  • Clean out your wallet or purse before you go. Do not carry any unnecessary credit cards with you. Do not carry an excessive amount of cash with you. Plan to use traveler's checks or credit cards for the majority of you purchases.
  • Carry your wallet in your front pocket or use a money belt.
  • Travel light. Heavy, cumbersome bags will slow you down and make you more vulnerable to becoming a victim of a crime.
  • Don't use luggage that is expensive and of a designer's label. Doing so might make one think of the "goodies" that will be inside.
  • Know what is inside you luggage when you check it in. Make an itemized list of the items you have packed. Always keep anything of value, such as jewelry or medicine, in your carry on items.
  • If you are going on an extended vacation, consider shipping large bags to your destination in advance. For the return trip, mail bulky new purchases home or better yet, ask the merchants to do it for you.
  • Always be aware of your surrounding.

Have a safe, fun trip!
