Mauresmo Qualifies the Easy Way

HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - Third seed Amelie Mauresmo moved into the third round of the Hanover Grand Prix on Wednesday without hitting a ball but three other seeds were knocked out.

France's Mauresmo, who received a bye into the second round, advanced the easy way as her opponent, Slovenian Tina Pisnik, withdrew with injury before their scheduled match.

In the matches that went ahead, Czech Denisa Chladkova claimed the biggest scalp when she ousted fourth-seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva 3-6 6-2 6-3.

Fifth seed Anke Huber was beaten 6-1 6-7 6-2 in the first round by 16-year-old Belgian Kim Clijsters to ensure no German player made it to the second round.

Israel's Anna Smashnova then knocked out sixth seed Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania 7-5 6-2 in a second round match.

Top seed Serena Williams enters the tournament Thursday against Belgium's Sabine Appelmans.

French second seed Nathalie Tauziat will also be in action, against Dutchwoman Kristie Boogert. Tauziat beat Williams in the final of the Paris Open Sunday.
