BRAUNE ZUCKER PLATZCHEN 
(Brown Sugar Cookies)
(Yield: 4 dozen)

2 cups self-rising flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
1½ cups firmly packed brown sugar
2/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
1 cup raisins
½ cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°F.  Spray cookie sheets with non-stick vegetable spray.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, and cloves; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.  Add eggs, milk, and orange rind; beat until well blended.  Add flour, beating until well blended.  Stir in raisins and walnuts.  Drop by teaspoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheets.

Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.  Remove from cookie sheets; cool completely on a wire rack.
