U.S. Fascism: Worship of Corporation, Jesus as CEO What most Americans still don't understand is that We, the People, no longer exist. Government of, for, and by the People has been slipping away for decades and at an accelerated rate since the late 1970's. While we've been lamenting over our two-party dominated system, those two parties have, indeed, merged as one at the national level. And are quickly morphing into one at the state level. By and large, Democrats and Republicans are much the same because both are puppets of the powerful corporations that fuel their campaigns thus set the agenda. While most of our national elected officials, civil servants, and judges don’t start out with the goal of trading idealism for cash, they do so at some point, to some extent, or don’t advance in the game. A few opt to keep their souls and noble ideas. It’s a paradox, of course, because in a capitalistic political world, materialistic profit trumps altruistic endeavor. One who doesn’t sell and trade, does so at the expense of power that might otherwise advance noble ideas. Yet one who does opt to sell and trade, does so at the expense of noble ideas for power and inclusion in “the club.” Those who make it to Congress without completely selling out, Rep. Dennis Kuchinich for instance, struggle to succeed and have little impact on policy. There remains the possibility of representative democracy at local and state levels, but these opportunities are dwindling quickly now that the national government is firmly held by Fascists. American Liberal has been calling the elitist that hold power in our government and multi-national corporations fascists since 1999, long before it was in vogue. Use of the terms fascists and fascism was not then, now, or ever, used lightly. No political ideology is static. That is to say that there is theory and practice. In practice components may be added, subtracted, or altered to form a variation of the theoretical idea. So, when American Liberal calls the current powers in this country fascists, it doesn't mean they are exactly like the infamous examples that come to mind of Nazi Germany, Fascist Spain, and Fascist Italy. Fascist DNA from these “ancestor” regimes is most definitely found in the ideology that has emerged in our country; however, other factors have come into the mix: religion, geography, historical roots both imperialist and democratic, unfettered wealth, and nearly a century of being the global power. To borrow the phrase: the fascism that has blossomed before our eyes is an American Original. An American Original: U.S. Fascistheocracy 1. The State (nation state) is ALL. All groups and individuals are viewed in relation to the State. Citizens of the State are allowed some personal liberty so long as it does not interfere with the State. (I could write a book on this theme alone.) Check this for yourself. Americans are mostly free to consume; go anywhere, do most anything as long as one has the money to pay for it. Yet increasingly, those who chose to exercise Constitutional rights of free expression critical against the State meet resistance. Few examples to start with: Protesting leaders openly is deemed “unpatriotic” and oxymoronic Free Speech Zones put into play; those that demand that all votes be counted are not hailed “sore loserman” not Americans standing up for basic rights; issues like universal healthcare, workers’ rights (unions), and reproductive rights is something only socialists engage in, etc. is systematically eliminated. 2. Growth of the State is an ever-present goal. Growth meaning both expanding power of the State (government and corporate elite rule over citizens) within and without (imperialist policy, invasion of sovereign nations, war making). Thus, corporate profits trump workers' right to living wage, health care, and reasonable job security. Corporations and the wealthy elite get big tax breaks at the expense of the masses. What separates a US Fascist from an old- fashion fiscal conservative Republican is that the former is more than willing to plunge the nation into debt in quest for glory of empire and that the latter believes that he/she can work with the latter because the share same ideology--wrong! 3. War and violence are glorious and forever. Peace is impossible and not to be considered. The Hawk devours the Dove. What would Jesus think of this? Hmm? 4. Duty to the State is required. Blind nationalism/patriotism (jingoism) is exalted. Free expression is despised. Protesters are troublemakers—hide them in Free Speech Zone or arrest them. 5. Chauvinism is exalted. (Don't be a Girly-man). Kill for victory (in whatever you do) or die trying. Liberal ideology and expression is villainized and blamed for all societal woes. Social welfare is the worse thing to happen to the Republic; no mention of the real vampire: Corporate Welfare. 6. Elite manipulates Capitalist Class. The capitalist class embraces fascism out of fear or to gain supreme power. In traditional fascist theory, the bourgeoisie (capitalist class) embrace the ideology out of fear of the proletariat (working class) gaining equity with and/or power over them. In the recent history of the United States, the capitalist elite (top 1-20 percent) have manipulated middle and upper middle-class small business owners and management white collar workers (bourgeoisie and some proletariat) against all other white and blue collar workers (proletariat). Even as middle managers experienced massive layouts and small business owners struggle against corporate giants like Wal-Mart, white-collar middle class remains loyal to State power that represents big Corporate Interests. Labor unions decline and those that remain lose bargaining power and influence. US Fascism Has a Friend in Jesus In the US, the Radical Right has masterfully used Evangelical Christianity to recruit bourgeoisie (capitalist class) and proletariat (working class) into their ranks. This isn't so odd considering that Judeo-Christian mythology features a chauvinistic, vengeful, white male a.k.a. God. Interestingly, beginning with Reagan, the fascist elements in the Republican Party began using God and conservative social issues (reproductive choice, school prayer, etc.) to expand the base. Hope this brief synopsis gives pause to consider our recent history and the motivations by those in power, which has led us to the abyss. More detailed commentary and analysis will be forthcoming. |
