Chapter 13 Jessica awoke with a start. She could have sworn that she heard a door slam. She sat straight up in bed and prayed that it was Brian. She wasn't waiting around to find out. She jumped up and ran down the hall to his hotel room. She knocked loudly and a few minutes later Nick answered the door looking strangely sad. "What's wrong?" Jessica asked earnestly. She had a bad feeling that something had happened to Brian and all she wanted to do was hold him. "Nothing," Nick said, quickly putting on a fake smile. "Listen, I know you're here to see Brian, but he's really tired and maybe it would be better if he just rested." "Nick, is there something that you're not telling me?" She eyed him suspiciously. "No," he lied. "Then let me see him," she demanded. She walked past Nick into the living room where Brian was lying on the huge couch, watching TV. When he saw her, he pulled her down on the couch with him. She wrapped her arms around him and laid her head on his chest. "I needed to see you, Bri. I had this horrible feeling that something had happened to you." Brian looked at her and realized that his secret wouldn't be an easy one to hide. "You look so sad," he commented. He got up slowly and began walking towards the door. "Where're you going?" she asked as she followed him with her eyes. "I'm gonna make you smile," he grinned slyly. He opened the door and looked around the hallway. Brian quickly spotted a group of girls coming up from the pool. They almost fainted when he asked them to come to him. He instructed them to wait behind the corner and that Nick would be out in a second. Jessica couldn't help but wonder what was going on in his head. "Frack," Brian yelled to Nick. "Come here and look at this." Jessica looked on as Nick emerged from his bedroom in only his boxers and walked towards the door. She watched as Brian pushed Nick into the hallway and slammed the door. She felt so bad for poor Nick, all locked out in his boxers, but she was rolling in the floor, laughing. "What'd you do that for?" she asked when she caught her breath. "To see you laugh," he said with a smile. "I don't like it when you're sad. Besides, I wanna be alone with you; we've not been alone in the same room since this tour started." "So you left poor Frack to that mob of teenyboppers?" Jessica couldn't help laughing though she was trying to sound serious. "Oh it was hardly a mob. Just about 5 girls. Besides, Kev will get tired of hearing him yell, and he'll let him in." Brian laid back down on the couch and held her tightly. "He'll probably get me back tomorrow, but being with you is worth it." "You're crazy. You know that, don't you?" she asked him as she ran her fingers through his hair. "But I love you anyway." "Would you if I had any other faults?" She laughed at his question, but when she looked up, she saw that his blue eyes were questioning her. "What do you mean?" she asked slowly. "I mean, I've been really lucky my entire life. I've had that hole in my heart and had surgery to fix it. I know Nick told you about Leighanne breaking up with me just before that; she did it because I wasn't the perfect little choir boy anymore; I had something wrong with me. It wasn't my fault, but she couldn't handle sick people. Anyway, to get to my question..." he trailed off. Jessica could see the fear in his eyes as he asked his question. "If I was sick or had something wrong with me, would you still love me? Don't just tell me what I wanna hear." "Of course I would stay with you, Bri. I'm always gonna love you no matter what," she replied without hesitation. She was alarmed to see that much relief in his eyes. "Did you really doubt me?" "Not you. I trust you completely. It's love that I dont trust. In the past, all it has done is fail me." "C'mon, Brian. You know that true love never fails. And I know that this is true love. I promise with all my heart." "Then I believe you," he whispered as they shared their first real kiss in a while. She laid her head on his chest and fell asleep to the sound of their hearts beating as one.
